Miloud Belkoniene’s research investigates the relationship between our understanding of linguistic representations and our understanding of non-linguistic phenomena, as mediated by representations.
The project «Understanding: Between Contents and Phenomena, by relying on tools from the philosophy of language, the philosophy of science, epistemology and moral philosophy, aims to investigate the relationships between linguistic, empirical and moral understanding in light of the capacities that are responsible for their achievement. One of the project's main objectives is to show that the manner in which representations, such as explanations, must be grasped to achieve an understanding of certain phenomena depends on the very nature of the phenomena that these representations depict. Specifically, that the nature of the cognitive engagement with representations required to understand empirical phenomena differs significantly from that required to understand normative phenomena, such as moral phenomena.
